UAE Foreign Minister Visits Iran

Even as tensions between the United States and Iran have heightened over the past couple of years, regional U.S.-allies, like the United Arab Emirates, have sought to improve their individual relationships with the Iran. The most recent visit by the UAE’s Foreign Minister only represents one instance in a string of high-level diplomatic visits by Emirati and Iranian dignitaries to each others’ countries. Though these efforts do not necessarily undermine the strategic importance of the UAE’s relationship with the United States, they seem to signal a growing rift between the hard-line positions taken by the Bush Administration and the interests of the United States’ regional allies.  The new president would do well to consider the spillover effects that the United States’ foreign policy toward Iran has upon the country’s relationship with its neighbors.
